June 11-18, 2023, Signs and Smiles completed their second annual Deaf Education Travel/Study Excursion to support the Escuela de Educación Especial San Miguel de Allende (EEESMA).
During the week, participants observed and interacted with students and staff at EEESMA, as well as did some sightseeing in the UNESCO Heritage city of San Miguel de Allende.
During my recent trip to San Miguel de Allende, I had the privilege of spending a week observing and interacting with deaf students and their teachers at the Escuela de Educación Especial San Miguel de Allende (EEESMA), which is a local school for the deaf. It was truly a wonderful experience that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the unique culture of this community. We were also able to explore the historic city. I feel extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with Signs and Smiles and meet new friends.David Meeks
On June 19 and 20, board members Audrey Ramirez-Loudenback, Chris Kurz, Kyle Duarte, and Patrick Graham provided professional development training to the teaching staff at EEESMA as well as started work on developing an early language app with vocabulary from Lengua de Señas Mexicana (Mexican Sign Language, or LSM) that can be utilized by families of Deaf children throughout Mexico.
